Wauconda, Illinois
Wauconda Area Library enlisted Featherstone to steward forward the total reconfiguration that the library underwent in the last decade. A transformative project in 2015 consisted of an award–winning expansion of 17,000 sf to the existing 14,000 sf library. This entailed adding a second story to the existing structure and expanding the building in all four directions. In 2018, a complete interior and exterior renovation was completed which included significant site improvements and a new front entryway.

Special consideration was provided in evaluating the complete renovation and expansion of the original undersized library since funds were limited and the community still demanded access to the library during it much needed renovation and expansion project. Through Tom Featherstone’s leadership and determination of getting the most economically delivery while maintaining the valuable resource to the community, vacate store space in downtown Wauconda was study as a potential temporary branch location with easy public access. After preparing all the cost and scheduling information, the plan became very apparent to move the library out of the current location to the temporary vacant store, which was also renovated as part of the overall project budget, to maintain the visitor’s experience while saving the library multiple phases of renovation, shorter overall construction durations, and allowing more of the capital improvement funds to be allocated towards valuable library improvements. Through the success of the original project, Featherstone has been brough back year after year to care for the upkeep, maintenance, and two additional renovation projects including the most resent new entrance project all spanning over 27 years.
